Anderson Fields has recently become a landscaped green play area with seating, artwork, play sculptures and somewhere to play football. Ideas for the space were inspired by models made by the school children of Adamsdown Primary, situated opposite Anderson Fields, with artist Andrew Small. In the project's initial stages, an open sided caravan with 'concept boards' was set up in the square beside the park to harvest ideas from locals. Andrew said that as an artist he believed in using: "Good quality materials to bring quality into a space, quality and value into the area," and creating "sculptural forms that get away from obvious stuff such as dragons." Ian Maddox, the Landscape designer for Cardiff Council, who has jointly designed and supervised the Anderson Fields project said: "It's designed really for a range of ages, but the older children tend to go to Cemetery Park, so it's especially aimed at under 14's. It's also aimed at trying to get residents from surrounding flats and houses to go outside and to use open spaces, meet and talk to each other, a lot of residents within the same building don't even know each other." |

There are a lot of activities for young people in Adamsdown, but what about older members of the community? Where can they go for fun and friendship? UWIC student Katy Blake found the answer is Adamsdown Day Centre, next to St Germans Church on Star Street. She spent a day there getting to know staff and day centre club members. They're a very friendly bunch. Click picture to meet some of them Day Centre Manager, Marisa, says that there's room for new members to join – and it only costs £2.80 a day including a hot lunch. So if you're interested call in at the Day Centre on Star Street or phone Marisa on Cardiff 02920 482899. |
