Capoeira Performance on 11 March 2009 in Adamsdown during Youth Club Night as part of Project Conscience in Movement with Beribazu Capoeira Group from Cardiff and Bristol lead by Professor Claudio Campos Capoeira is a Brazilian art form and sport combining martial arts, acrobatics, dance and music. It was created in the 17th century by African slaves in Brazil who disguised their martial arts training from their masters as a dance. In time it developed into a play-fight game that is almost a non-contact sport. Because of this it is popular with women as well as men and played by all age groups. Since it is played to the sound of drums and other percussion instruments it also has a strong musical component.
Capoeira is very popular in Brazil where it can be found in most towns. It has also become popular throughout the world in the last 30 years being played in over 120 countries. Young people aged 5-14 at Adamsdown Play Centre have recently had the chance to enjoy workshops delivered by Claudio Campos and his students Pedro and Natacha as part of a social project called Conscience in Movement. |

Jon Blake, local author and songwriter, coordinated the project and worked closely with the community in creating the song. "The Song for Adamsdown project was first proposed to the Adamsdown Community Project in December 2008. It was taken on as an Adamsdown Arts Association initiative and welcomed by the heads of local primary schools. "The idea was to write a song which encapsulated both Adamsdown’s history and the area today, to be sung by pupils in the local schools, who would also help to draft the lyrics and do the artwork for the CD. "I wanted us to create something which would give all Adamsdown’s residents a good feeling about the place where we live, and in a small way help us to cohere as a community. "Hopefully this song project will only be the beginning and we will be able to give a voice to many other people in the area. Spread the word!" Update : A launch event for the Song will take place on the 11th of June at Adamsdown Primary School on Star Street at 4pm. CDs will be available to purchase for only £1 from the 12th from Clifton Street Spar, Hungry Planet and Clifton Pharmacy. For more information on the project and to hear the song visit the Song for Adamsdown blog at http://adamsdown.wordpress.com |
